Costa Rica is Open for Travel!

Costa Rica is Open for Travel!

We are your travel expert, here to keep you up-to-date and in-the-know with the latest Costa Rica travel news! Since March 18, 2020, the Costa Rican borders have been closed to international travelers. The Costa Rica tourism board has been doing its part to keep COVID cases to a minimum in Costa Rica—and we’re grateful for this!

We are incredibly excited to announce that Costa Rica is reopening its borders to all U.S. states on November 1, 2020.

Here’s what you need to know:

Is Costa Rica open to tourists?

Yes, it is! Take a look at our recent Costa Rica travel update to see the U.S. states that have been approved to travel to Costa Rica as of October 1st. According to the Costa Rica U.S. Embassy, residents from Florida, Georgia and Texas can enter Costa Rica as of October 15, 2020.

And the moment we’ve all been waiting for… *drum roll*… as of November 1, 2020, all U.S. citizens can travel from the U.S. to Costa Rica! We can’t wait to visit Costa Rica again, but we still want to make sure our fellow travelers are safe amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. Department of State has deemed Costa Rica unsafe to travel as of August 6, 2020. This Costa Rica travel advisory is due to the CDC’s Level 3 Travel Health Notice regarding the Coronavirus.

So although Costa Rica is opening its borders, this doesn’t mean we can disregard the current disease state of COVID-19. As your expert travel guide, it’s our mission to ensure that you’re safe on your Costa Rican adventure! We will never advise you to do anything that may jeopardize your health, and the health of your family and friends.

Please use caution! Do your research! Stay informed with the latest travel advisory updates before making a travel decision.

How to Travel Costa Rica Safely

Before planning your trip to Costa Rica, there are a few things you’ll need to know to ensure a safe adventure.

  1. Bring all required documents during COVID-19. To enter Costa Rica during the Coronavirus, you’ll need to present a negative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test, taken within 72 hours. In other words, you’ll need proof that you do not have COVID-19. You’ll need an epidemiological health pass—fill yours out here! You’re required to show proof of health insurance and proof of residency in a U.S. state.

You’ll also need to purchase travel insurance to cover your accommodations in case you contract the virus during your travels. (Travel insurance can be as low as $12 a day! Depending on how long you stay in Costa Rica, this daily rate may be lower too.)

  1. Follow all COVID-19 safety protocols. Wear your mask, stay six feet away from your neighbor, and wash your hands every chance you get. Following these protocols is incredibly important, not only in Costa Rica, but in every other country too! We each need to do our part to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Even if you think you’re healthy enough to fight off the virus, the people around you may not be.

Protect yourself and others by maintaining safe distances from people and wearing a mask over your nose and mouth at all times in public. If you don’t follow the protocols in Costa Rica, you can be fined for non-compliance. Be respectful of the locals, of your friends, and of your family!

  1. Only travel when you’re comfortable. We understand that tensions and anxieties are especially high right now during COVID-19. For our fellow Timid Travelers, we encourage you to only travel when you’re comfortable. We know you’re excited to travel to Costa Rica—believe us, we are too!
